More Than a Sale: Finding Joy at a Local Artisan Fayre

This bank holiday weekend, I decided it was time to take my own advice.

I’m always encouraging my kids to try new things, , to step into that area just outside their comfort zone and discover the magic that happens there. But if I’m honest, it’s always much easier to say those words than to live them.

So, I stepped firmly out of mine and signed up to display my art at Beer Artisan Fayre.

I won’t pretend I felt prepared. My “stall” was a lovingly chaotic collection of bits and pieces gathered from around the house to display my limited recent art work and a few last minute cheap ebay 'help the display' purchases.

What I found instead was something far more meaningful than I expected.

From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed into a warm, vibrant community of fellow artisans. These were people who understood the vulnerability of putting your work out into the world. They celebrated every sale—not just their own, but everyone’s. Each time I sold a piece, there were smiles, encouragement, and yes… a little dance from me, cheered on by people who had only just met me.

There was no competition, only kindness. No ego, only shared joy.

I did sell a few pieces, which felt wonderful. I met lovely holidaymakers, some of whom now have my art hanging in their homes—a thought that still makes me smile. A couple of pieces are even making their way to Australia, which feels surreal and incredibly special.

But the real takeaway from the weekend wasn’t the sales.

It was the people.

The conversations, the laughter, the generosity in sharing advice and experiences. The genuine happiness everyone felt for one another’s small wins. It reminded me that sometimes, the most valuable part of stepping out of your comfort zone isn’t what you achieve—it’s who you meet and how you feel along the way.

I went there hoping to relieve my home of some of art..

I left with a renewed belief in community, kindness, and the magic that happens when you simply show up and try.

Safe to say, my kids might be hearing “step out of your comfort zone” a little more often… but now, I can truly say I mean it. If you ever want to visit a truly lovely Artisan Fayre, head to Beer in East Devon and discover the Mariners Hall with a mix of unique treasures and smiles on their Artisan weekends.

Next Beer Artisan Fayre May 16th & 17th.
