Are you self employed? Do you take ‘REAL’ time out?

Being self employed and a sole trader for many years, I, like many others lived the motto, "no work, no pay", but as time has gone on, the value of taking time out became more apparent to me. I would often fret about no work coming in or taking a holiday without my laptop… but I have now learnt to enjoy the quiet time periods more and take that time for me (as well as a little bit of marketing time sometimes ;) but knowing there will be moments when I don’t have enough hours in the day will balance this time out.

I now ensure a few times a year, I take family holidays with no lap top packed (noticing my kids smile a relief with this) . I have realised how important this is for me and my family.

There are many reasons for taking a break, and these are some highlighted ones:

1. Avoid Burnout

  • Continuous Workload: Being self-employed often means wearing many hats—you're the boss, the employee, the marketer, the accountant, and more. This can lead to long hours and constant stress.

  • Mental Health: Without proper breaks, you risk burning out, which can harm your mental and physical health, and reduce your productivity in the long run.

2. Recharging Creativity

  • Fresh Perspective: Time away from work can give you a fresh perspective on your business. A break can inspire new ideas and solutions to problems you’ve been stuck on.

  • Creativity Boost: Rest and relaxation often lead to improved creativity and innovation, which are crucial for business growth and problem-solving.

3. Improved Productivity

  • Restored Focus: After a holiday, you return to work with renewed focus and energy, which can enhance your productivity and efficiency.

  • Reduced Mistakes: Fatigue can lead to errors. By taking a break, you reduce the likelihood of making costly mistakes due to exhaustion.

4. Maintaining Work-Life Balance

  • Personal Relationships: Taking time off helps maintain a balance between work and personal life, which is essential for long-term happiness and well-being.

  • Preventing Isolation: Especially if you work alone, it’s important to take breaks to reconnect with friends, family, and the world outside your business.

5. Long-Term Sustainability

  • Preventing Overwork: Regular holidays help ensure that you can sustain your business over the long term, rather than burning out and potentially having to give up on your entrepreneurial journey.

  • Health and Well-being: Your business is dependent on you. Taking care of your health by taking time off ensures that you can continue to operate effectively.

6. Setting Boundaries

  • Healthy Habits: Taking holidays helps establish a healthy boundary between work and rest, which is vital for mental health and overall quality of life.

  • Business Perspective: It reminds you that your business should serve your life, not the other way around. It's a good practice to ensure that your work doesn’t consume every aspect of your life.

7. Opportunity for Reflection

  • Business Review: A holiday gives you time to reflect on your business's direction, goals, and strategies, helping you to assess what’s working and what needs adjustment.

  • Personal Growth: Time off can also be a period for personal growth and development, allowing you to explore new hobbies, interests, or skills that can benefit your business indirectly.

Taking a holiday is not just a luxury but a necessary part of maintaining a healthy, successful self-employment career. It ensures you remain motivated, creative, and productive, ultimately contributing to your business's success.

So take the break, book the holiday and leave the laptop behind and put on out of office.
